The estimated production is estimated to have been around 30,000 arms that were produced between 1861 and 1865. Some Union Cavalry units were issued the Smith, including the 3rd. West Virginia, 7th and 11th Illinois, 1st Connecticut, 7th and 14th Pennsylvania, 7th and 17th Pennsylvania, 6th and 9th Ohio and the 1st Massachusetts. This example, serial number 8619, is in very good condition with an overall grayish patina. There is some cosmoline staining in several places, and none of the case hardening remains on the breech. The wood is nice, with a small crack behind the breech, and has the usual nicks and dings associated with storage. The inspector; cartouche is not visible. All markings are strong, and the mechanical action operates fine. The barrel band has the sling swivel usually found on examples before the 11,000 serial range.
