Very fine condition Remington Mississippi Rifle altered by Frederick H. Grosz to accept a socket bayonet for the State of New York. In early 1861, the State of New York acquired 5000 Remington-manufactured Mississippi Rifles from the federal government. The state initially contracted with E. Remington and Sons to alter them to accept a Collins saber bayonet. Remington was only able to complete approximately 3400 of the alterations. The remaining 1600 rifles were sent to Frederick H. Grosz of New York City to be altered to accept the model 1842 socket bayonet. Grosz performed the alteration by turning down approximately 3 inches off the muzzle of the barrel to accept the socket bayonet. Then a bayonet lug was brazed on the bottom of the barrel, and the front sight was moved back about 3 inches. The bore was not bored out to .58 caliber and remains in the original .54 caliber.
Overall, in fine condition with strong markings on the barrel and lock, and with a matching 1849 date. The iron parts exhibit an overall medium gray appearance. The brass-tipped ramrod appears to be original to the firearm. The wood is good, with several nicks and scraps, and a large scrape on the stock opposite the lock near the butt-plate.
