Union-style cap box with a handwritten note inside. The note reads, "John D. Bagwell, father of George Bagwell, carried this with him during the Civil War. My first thought was to research the Union Civil War records to find a match. I found a few John Bagwells, but none with a son named George to make a perfect match. Next, I tried Ancestry and found a perfect match. I found a John D. Bagwell from Hall County who served in the 43rd Georgia Infantry. Records indicate that Bagwell mustered into Company C, 43rd Georgia Infantry in March 1862. He was wounded and captured on July 4, 1863, at Vicksburg, Mississippi, losing an eye due to his wound. His obituary states that he was paroled and served for the remainder of the war. The box is in nice condition and still retains the original vent pick loops and latch tab.
