U.S. Model 1847 Artillery Musketoon – Springfield Armory, Dated 1853

Description:

Offered is an original U.S. Model 1847 .69 caliber smooth bore Artillery Musketoon manufactured at Springfield Armory. The lock plate is clearly dated 1853, a year in which approximately 400 examples were produced, making this a relatively scarce variation within the production run (1848–1859).

This piece is an attic-found example that has not been cleaned or restored.

The condition is as follows:

  • Metal: All metal surfaces have a dark, untouched patina with scattered "salt and pepper” pitting throughout. No active rust noted, but surfaces show age and storage wear consistent with long-term attic storage. The mechanical action is fine.
  • Markings: Lock date (1853) remains visible.
  • Wood: Stock is solid overall with good structure. There is a minor crack behind the lockplate, but it does not appear to compromise integrity. Wood shows expected wear but retains a pleasing, untouched look with an inspector's cartouche faintly visible under magnification.
  • Overall: Honest, as-found condition with no signs of modern refinishing. The Model 1847 Artillery Musketoon was designed for artillery troops and is less commonly encountered than standard infantry muskets. Early production examples, especially those from lower-output years like 1853, are of particular interest to collectors.
