A scarce and highly desirable Confederate Richmond rifled musket, representing a completely untouched and original example as found. This piece remains in "as-issued” condition, showing no signs of restoration, alteration, or cleaning—an increasingly rare state for surviving Confederate arms.
The lock plate is clearly dated 1863 and marked Richmond, Virginia, with strong, legible markings. The barrel retains visible "VP” and eagle proof marks, though the barrel date is no longer discernible. All components appear correct and original to the piece, including the proper Richmond-pattern hammer and original rear sight.
The metal surfaces exhibit a pleasing, even patina consistent with age and honest use, with no evidence of modern polishing or refinishing. The barrel bands show appropriate markings for Richmond production, with the exception of the rear band, which is unmarked but consistent with known variations.
The stock remains in its original, uncleaned condition, displaying scattered nicks, dings, and wear typical of field use and long-term storage. A small sliver of wood once present adjacent to the barrel tang—likely a period loss—remains absent today, as shown. This does not detract from the musket’s overall integrity but instead reinforces its untouched nature.
Overall, this is a completely original, "unmolested” Richmond musket, offering exceptional authenticity and historical character. Such pure examples, retaining all original parts and finish, are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire and are highly sought after by advanced collectors.
