Nice example with the US. marking on the blade. Overall, a dark, deep patina, free from any defects. This example fits the M1835/42 pattern or a close variant. It will also fit the U.S. Model Mississippi Rifle with the Groetz turned-barrel alteration. It is a classic triangular-blade socket bayonet designed for the .69 caliber smooth-bore percussion musket. The overall length is 20–21 inches (often listed around 20¾"). The triangular blade is 18 inches long, tapering to a point. The socket is 2⅝–2⅞ inches long, with a bridge and mortise slot for attaching to the musket’s barrel lug. The inside diameter is typically .850–.860 inches to fit the muzzle. This bayonet was the standard issue for the last U.S. alteration. It was used extensively into the Civil War era, including on some rifled conversions.
