Very nice condition Emerson Gaylord pistol cartridge box with maker's mark on the inside flap. The U.S. Government ordinance inspector's is stamped sharply and clearly on the front flap. This pistol cartridge box was manufactured by Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. It was designed to carry revolver cartridges for Union cavalry troops and officers. Typically constructed of heavy bridle or buff leather, these boxes featured a closing flap, belt loops on the reverse, and an internal leather cartridge compartment to secure .36- or .44-caliber ammunition packs. Most examples are stamped on the inner flap with the maker’s mark: "E. GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS.” These cartridge boxes were prized for their sturdy construction and saw extensive field use during the American Civil War. Emerson Gaylord (1817–1899) was one of the largest and most respected Union military accouterments contractors of the Civil War era. Beginning his career with the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts, he later purchased its leather goods division in 1856 and established his own business producing military equipment, fire hose, belts, mail bags, and leather gear. During the Civil War, Gaylord’s company supplied thousands of cartridge boxes, cap pouches, belts, and cavalry accouterments to the U.S. government and individual states.
