Excavated Hotchkiss percussion fuse developed by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss, an American engineer and arms designer who created the Hotchkiss shell in the late 1850s. His design became one of the most widely used rifled artillery projectiles employed by Union forces during the war. The percussion fuse detonated the shell upon impact with a target, rather than relying solely on a timed fuse. Upon impact, the force drove the striker into the cap, igniting the bursting charge inside the shell. Nice excavated example recovered from an unknown battlefield.
