A fine and desirable Batty "Peace” powder flask manufactured circa 1850 by brothers Joseph H. Batty and John T. Batty of Springfield. This classic American military flask is identified as a "Peace” flask by its distinctive motif of clasped hands, a symbol traditionally associated with unity and peace. The body is attractively decorated with a patriotic eagle above a shield bearing the letters "U.S.,” a design closely associated with mid-19th-century American military equipment. The flask bears the inspector’s mark L.B.C., identifying government inspector LUKE B. Chase, whose mark is found on military contract accoutrements of the period. Batty Peace flasks were commonly issued with or used alongside the U.S. Model 1817 Common Rifle and the Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle, making them an important accessory for collectors of antebellum U.S. military arms.

This example remains in fine condition, retaining an attractive, untouched age-old patina. The embossed details remain clear and well defined. As is often encountered with these copper flasks, there is some separation along portions of the body seam, but it does not detract from the flask’s overall appearance or desirability.
