Maynard Priming System Conversion Musket – New Jersey Contract

Scarce U.S. musket altered to the Maynard tape priming system, utilizing locks manufactured by the Remington Arms and fitted by the Frankford Arsenal. Originally a flintlock arm, this example was subsequently rifled and sighted at Frankford Arsenal for improved accuracy. Approximately 2,000 of these converted muskets were delivered to the State of New Jersey and are identified by their state markings.

This example remains in attic-found condition with an attractive untouched dark patina throughout and scattered pitting concentrated around the bolster area. The lock is dated 1858 and retains good mechanical function. The Maynard primer door retaining pin is absent, and the musket is fitted with a replacement ramrod. The J. of the State of New Jersey is faintly struck but visible under magnification. A desirable and uncommon state-marked example representing an important transitional period in American military firearms development as the U.S. Army moved from flintlock ignition to more advanced percussion systems.
