The U.S. Model 1858 Enlisted "Jeff Davis" Hardee Hat represents one of the most iconic and recognizable pieces of Union Army headgear from the American Civil War. This exceptionally well-preserved example retains its classic appearance and is complete with its original infantry insignia consisting of Company K above the infantry hunting horn and the 3rd Regiment numeral below. The hat is further adorned with its original black ostrich plume and sky-blue worsted hat cord, the prescribed branch color for the infantry.

The interior is equally impressive, retaining the original manufacturer's gold-stamped "U.S. Army" eagle marking with Size No. 7 and No. 3 designation clearly visible. Also present is the original 2½-inch leather sweatband, a feature seldom encountered in such complete condition. The black felt body remains remarkably well preserved, exhibiting excellent form and structure with only light indications of age and service. A tiny tear is visible on the edge above the hat pin. Overall, this is a superior example of one of the rarest and most desirable items of Civil War enlisted headgear.

The Model 1858 Hardee Hat, commonly known as the "Jeff Davis Hat," was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1858 while Jefferson Davis served as Secretary of War. Named for Major William J. Hardee, whose recommendations influenced its adoption, the hat became the regulation full-dress headgear for enlisted soldiers prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. Constructed of stiff black felt with a wide brim, it was designed to be worn with a brass branch insignia, colored worsted hat cord identifying the soldier's branch of service, and a black ostrich plume for dress occasions. Infantry soldiers wore the left side of the brim turned up and secured with the regulation brass Jeff Davis eagle side pin.

Although officially issued throughout the Civil War, many soldiers found the Hardee Hat heavy and uncomfortable for active campaigning, preferring the more practical forage cap or civilian slouch hat. Nevertheless, it remained an enduring symbol of the Union Army and was famously worn by such distinguished units as the Iron Brigade, whose soldiers became widely known as the "Black Hats." Complete enlisted Hardee Hats with original insignia, plume, interior markings, and sweatband are among the most sought-after and historically significant examples of Civil War military headgear, making this specimen an outstanding addition to any advanced collection of Union headgear.
