This is a fine example of a Confederate D-guard Bowie knife manufactured at the Confederate arsenal in Kenansville, North Carolina, during the American Civil War. The knife features a 16-inch spear-point blade in fine condition with only a few minor edge nicks consistent with period use. The original leather scabbard remains in very good condition, retaining its rare leather belt attachment, and has a small separation near the scabbard tip. The upper tin throat mount is intact, although the protective tip is missing. Faint initials are present on one side of the scabbard, with several appearing to read either "LA GA" or "LACA," though they are no longer fully discernible. Confederate D-guard Bowies produced at Kenansville were among the South's most recognizable arsenal-made fighting knives, manufactured to equip soldiers when imported and commercially produced weapons became increasingly scarce. Their sturdy construction and distinctive iron D-guard provided excellent hand protection, making them highly valued sidearms throughout the war. Original Kenansville Bowies with their scabbards and belt attachments intact are increasingly difficult to find, making this an attractive and desirable Confederate edged weapon. The Confederate arms factory at Kenansville, North Carolina, was one of the South's most important private manufacturers of edged weapons during the Civil War. Established by skilled German immigrant Louis Froelich, the operation began in Wilmington in late 1861 before relocating to Kenansville in 1862–1863 to escape disease and improve production. From its Duplin County facility, the factory produced thousands of cavalry sabers, officer's swords, saber bayonets, Bowie knives, lance heads, naval and artillery cutlasses, as well as military accoutrements including belts, buttons, knapsacks, and surgical instrument sets for Confederate and North Carolina state forces. Despite being destroyed during a Federal cavalry raid in 1863, the factory was quickly rebuilt and resumed production until 1864. Today, weapons produced at the Kenansville armory—particularly the distinctive D-guard Bowie knives and "C.S.A." hilted swords—are among the rarest and most sought-after Confederate military artifacts, reflecting the vital role North Carolina's industry played in supplying Southern armies during the war.
