A classic Confederate cartridge box featuring the distinctive lead finial and its original painted (tarred) canvas over-the-shoulder sling. The box remains in good, untouched condition, retaining its original leather closure tab and iron roller sling attachment buckles. One side seam has separated, as shown in the photographs, and should be professionally stabilized to prevent further deterioration. Otherwise, the box displays the honest wear expected of an authentic field-used Confederate accoutrements.

As the Confederacy struggled with severe leather shortages throughout the Civil War, Southern arsenals increasingly substituted painted canvas for shoulder slings and other equipment whenever possible. These tarred canvas slings proved both economical and serviceable, but few survived the ravages of war and the passage of time. Consequently, any Confederate cartridge boxes retaining their original painted canvas slings are considerably scarcer than those fitted with leather slings and are highly sought after by advanced collectors of Confederate military equipment.
