Palmetto Armory Rifled Musket by William Glaze – Columbia, South Carolina

As sectional tensions mounted in the years preceding the Civil War, the State of South Carolina took the unprecedented step of establishing the Palmetto Armory in Columbia under the direction of William Glaze to manufacture military arms for its state militia. Approximately 6,000 muskets were produced under state contract, ensuring South Carolina troops would be equipped with domestically manufactured arms in anticipation of armed conflict. When war began in 1861, these muskets were among the first issued to South Carolina volunteers entering Confederate service.

Offered here is an outstanding and increasingly scarce rifled and sighted Palmetto Armory musket in fine, untouched condition. Unlike the more commonly encountered smooth-bore examples, this musket was altered at the Palmetto Armory between February and August 1861 under contract with the State of South Carolina by rifling the barrel with three shallow grooves and fitting it with the desirable long-range rear sight. This wartime improvement greatly enhances both its rarity and historical significance. The musket retains a pleasing, untouched dark patina acquired through age, having never been cleaned. The lock is crisply marked "COLUMBIA / S.C." with the date 1852 behind the hammer, while the front of the lock bears the distinctive Palmetto tree surrounded by the legend "PALMETTO ARMORY S.C." The iron butt plate is clearly marked S.C. and retains the typical Wm. Glaze markings on the barrel. The markings remain sharp and well- defined, making this an exceptional example of South Carolina's wartime arms production. A rare and historically important Palmetto Armory musket that represents South Carolina's determination to arm its militia before secession and is one of the finest Confederate long arms available to today's advanced Civil War collector.
