The U.S. Model 1878 Infantry Canteen is one of the most desirable canteens of the Indian Wars era, representing the final modification of the Civil War smoothside canteen before the adoption of later patterns. Many were refurbished from surplus Civil War canteens at Rock Island Arsenal, where they were fitted with the distinctive flexible triangular wire strap loops and detachable leather shoulder strap secured by double brass wire hooks. Because the detachable straps were easily lost or replaced during service, complete examples are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

This canteen is in good condition, retaining 100% of its original gray wool cloth cover with the distinctive painted "U.S." prominently displayed on the face. The original detachable leather carrying strap is present and complete, exhibiting two repairs on the reverse side, as shown in the accompanying photographs. An excellent, honest example of a U.S. military accouterment, equally at home in an advanced Indian Wars or late 19th-century military collection. Offered by Richard Ferry Military Antiques, specializing in the finest Civil War and American military antiques.
