An excellent example of a pre-Civil War State of Georgia purchased cartridge box, manufactured by the well-known military outfitter Emerson Gaylord & Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War, the State of Georgia purchased military accouterments from northern contractors as part of its efforts to equip the state militia. The contract was placed in 1860, and the boxes were U.S. pattern infantry cartridge boxes manufactured by Emerson Gaylord, but fitted with Georgia's distinctive state seal box plate instead of the federal "US" oval. This cartridge box is one of approximately 1000 purchased by the State of Georgia from Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts, under a pre–Civil War contract and is distinguished by its beautiful Georgia state seal cartridge box plate. Examples of these plates have been recovered from numerous Confederate camps occupied by Georgia troops during the 1861–1863 period, confirming their wartime service. Some of the plates were converted to waist belt plates by removing the loops and soldering copper belt hooks in their place. An example of this is referenced in Confederate Belt Plates and Buckles by Steve Mullinax. Following secession, many of these cartridge boxes continued in Confederate service, confirming their wartime use. This example remains in fine condition and retains a beautifully aged Georgia State Seal cartridge box plate with an untouched, rich patina. Accompanying the box is an original Southern painted canvas over-the-shoulder sling, also in fine condition, completing an increasingly scarce Confederate-used accouterment.

Founded in the 1850s, Emerson Gaylord & Company was among America's premier manufacturers of military equipment, supplying cartridge boxes, belts, cap pouches, bayonet scabbards, and other leather accouterments to numerous state militias before the Civil War. Their products were renowned for exceptional workmanship and durability, and many remained in service throughout the conflict.

Original Georgia contract cartridge boxes with their state seal plates are among the most desirable Confederate-related leather accouterments, representing the South's reliance on pre-war state purchases to arm and equip its early volunteer forces.
