This handsome British Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket was manufactured by the respected London gun-making firm of Potts & Hunt and remains in very fine collector condition, appearing almost unfired. The stock is exceptionally sharp with crisp edges and only a few minor storage marks. A Crown over "H" inspection mark is stamped behind the trigger guard, while the lock retains bold, deeply struck "POTTS & HUNT LONDON" markings. The metal surfaces display an attractive untouched patina throughout, and the rifle retains a crisp mechanical action with a bright bore exhibiting strong, sharp rifling. It is an outstanding example of a quality Enfield produced during the American Civil War.

History of Potts & Hunt:
Potts & Hunt was a prominent London gun-making firm that produced high-quality military arms during the mid-19th century. During the American Civil War, the company became one of the numerous British contractors supplying Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-muskets for export to North America. Their rifles were purchased by both Federal and Confederate purchasing agents through private contracts, and Potts & Hunt-marked Enfields are documented among the thousands of British arms imported during the conflict. The firm also maintained manufacturing interests in both London and Birmingham, an unusual arrangement that allowed it to assemble and market quality military arms on a larger scale than many contemporary makers. Today, Potts & Hunt-marked Enfields are highly sought after by collectors because of their direct association with the massive British arms trade that helped equip both armies during the Civil War.
