A scarce and highly desirable Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner Type III Confederate rifle manufactured in Greensboro, North Carolina, and dated 1863. This example is readily identified as a Type III by the Enfield-style escutcheons securing the lock bolts, a characteristic feature of this variation. The lock is crisply marked "M. J. & G. / N.C." with "C.S. / 1863" behind the hammer and retains an internal serial number 642 stamped on the inside of the lock plate. The rifle remains mechanically sound with a strong, functioning lock. The barrel bands display the distinctive "U" inspection marks commonly encountered on Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner rifles. A partial "P" proof mark remains visible behind the rear sight, while the accompanying "NC" inspection stamp has been obscured by oxidation. The stock has been lightly cleaned and coated for preservation, with the desirable M.J. & G. cartouche still discernible. Approximately 1,300 rifles were delivered by Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner during 1863, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to obtain. As one of the Confederacy's most important North Carolina arms contractors, Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner produced rifles noted for their quality of manufacture despite the South's limited industrial resources. Original examples bearing clear contractor markings remain highly sought after by advanced Confederate arms collectors and represent an important piece of Southern wartime manufacturing history.
