CIVIL WAR FORAGE CAP

A fine original Civil War forage cap retaining its original leather sweatband and cloth liner, both of which remain in remarkably well-preserved condition. The cap exhibits only minimal moth tracking, displays beautifully, and has excellent eye appeal. A portion of the contractor's paper label remains visible in the crown, showing the size designation "4" along with "N.Y." Based on research published in U.S. Army Headgear 1812–1872 by Paul Loane and John Langellier, the missing portion of the label was most likely "G. & S.", identifying one of the New York military contractors that supplied forage caps to the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Original contractor-labeled forage caps are increasingly difficult to locate, making this an especially desirable example for the advanced collector.

Another fine Civil War collectible offered by Richard Ferry Military Antiques, Florida's largest dealer in quality Civil War collectibles.
