DOG RIVER CONFEDERATE CAVALRY SABER
Item #: CS-62

A Confederate "Dog River" cavalry saber in fine condition, with an exceptionally fine scabbard. This particular example is much better quality than most, with a well-finished blade, a grip with twisted brass wire, and the leather blade 'washer" still extant. The scabbard is also superior in manufacture to the usual scabbards encountered, with a wide brass throat, and a finely finished lap-welded seam. This may possibly be a product of Nashville Plow Works or Sharp and Hamilton. The pommel cap and drag are both stamped "115".

The Confederate Dog River cavalry saber is one of the most recognizable Southern-made edged weapons of the American Civil War. These sabers are characterized by their rugged, hand-forged construction, reflecting the Confederacy's limited industrial resources and the urgent demand for cavalry arms. Although the term "Dog River" has long been applied by collectors to a distinctive group of unmarked Confederate sabers, the exact manufacturer or manufacturers remain a subject of scholarly debate. The name itself originated with early collectors and researchers and has endured as the accepted designation for this important class of Confederate swords.

This example is in very good condition, retaining an attractive, untouched patina throughout. The hilt is solid and tight, while the blade exhibits the typical hand-forged characteristics expected of an authentic Dog River saber. The grip remains well preserved, and the sword displays honest service wear consistent with wartime use without distracting damage. Overall, it is a fine representative example of one of the Confederacy's most desirable cavalry sabers and would make an outstanding addition to any advanced collection of Confederate edged weapons.
