Sharps Model 1859 Rifle — Serial No. 41143
A desirable example of one of the most recognizable and highly regarded breechloading arms of the Civil War era. This rifle was manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, and represented an important advancement in American military firearms development. This example retains the patented Sharps pellet priming system. Full-length military Sharps rifles are considerably scarcer than the much more commonly encountered Sharps carbines and have long been sought after by Civil War arms collectors. This example, serial number 41143, remains in good overall condition and displays strong, visible Sharps markings. The barrel breech is nicely stamped "U.S.”, providing an especially attractive military feature. The rifle retains its original-style iron patchbox and patented pellet priming mechanism. The mechanical action remains crisp and operates properly, and the bore retains good rifling. The walnut stock is in good condition as shown in the accompanying photographs, displaying the expected handling and age associated with a Civil War-period military arm. The iron buttplate exhibits areas of pitting, quite possibly resulting from the rifle having rested for an extended period on a damp cellar or storage-room floor. The barrel tang has a crack at the retaining screw closest to the trigger guard. Otherwise, the rifle presents well and retains the appealing untouched character collectors seek in an original military Sharps. A very pleasing example of the celebrated Sharps Model 1859 military rifle, combining strong markings, U.S. military identification, the distinctive pellet priming system, sound mechanics, and good remaining rifling.
