A pleasing example of an unmarked Confederate foot officer’s sword exhibiting characteristics commonly associated with the Richmond, Virginia firm of Boyle & Gamble. The brass guard and pommel display a pleasant, naturally aged patina, while the grip retains its original twisted brass wire wrapping and approximately 75% of the original leather covering.
The blade has an attractive mottled gray appearance with several period-type nicks along the cutting edge, consistent with age and use. No maker’s markings are visible. The sword is presently without its scabbard.
Overall, a handsome and honest Confederate officer’s sword with strong Southern characteristics and the distinctive appearance associated with Richmond manufacture.
