ENFIELD RIFLED MUSKET UNIT MARKED
Item #: MB-118

A P1853 Enfield Rifled Musket in very good condition. The lock action is crisp, with moderate pitting around the breech. No VR on lockplate, but with the correct export markings of a Crown and 24 gauge on the barrel indicate its production for export to the US or CS. The toe of the buttplate has some cross hatching, likely done by the soldier in the field. The sling attachments on the triggerguard and upper barrel band are missing. Most especially interesting are engravings on the triggerguard: " 56. A. 110. NYV". Surviving Union Enfields are known with exactly this general type of unit/rack marking, although placement and format were not standardized. Period-marked arms can be found with markings on the buttplate, buttplate tang, stock, or other brass furniture. One documented Massachusetts Enfield, for example, bears a company letter and regiment designation on its buttplate, while researchers note that state-owned Enfields were sometimes marked with an issue/rack number plus regiment and company.

The markings indicated:

"56. A. 110. NYV”

most logically reads as:

56 — rack or weapon number
A — Company A
110 — 110th Regiment
NYV — New York Volunteers

The actual August 25, 1862 muster-in roll for Company A, 110th New York State Volunteers has a column headed "Number each person.” On the Company A continuation page, the privates are numbered sequentially. NY Military & Naval Affairs

And the entry at No. 56 is:

56 — David Perry, Private, Company A, 110th New York State Volunteers. NY Military & Naval Affairs

56 — exactly the number assigned to David Perry on the Company A muster-in roll
A — Company A
110 — 110th Regiment
NYV — New York Volunteers

It should be kept in mind that this information does not exclusively confirm that David Perry actually carried this rifle, however, it does strongly suggest the issue of this weapon to that soldier.
