Spencer Model 1860 Carbine

A solid example of the iconic Spencer Model 1860 repeating carbine, one of the most important cavalry arms of the Civil War. This example is in good overall condition, retaining a pleasing, honest appearance. The receiver markings are quite light, with some scattered pitting on the left side. The bore remains good with visible rifling, and the mechanical action is crisp and functions properly. The original tubular magazine is present in the buttstock. The stock has a crack behind the lock as noted in my pictures. The serial number 38054 on this weapon indicates it was issued to Company E, 3rd New Jersey Cavalry in 1865.

A brief history of the 3rd NJ Cavalry:

Company E, 3rd New Jersey Cavalry was mustered into Federal service on January 4, 1864, and served with one of New Jersey’s most active late-war cavalry regiments. The unit participated in the Overland Campaign, operations in the Shenandoah Valley, and Sheridan’s 1865 campaigns. The regiment fought in notable actions such as the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Tom’s Brook, Cedar Creek, Dinwiddie Court House, Five Forks, Sailor’s Creek, and Appomattox, and was present during the final campaign culminating in Lee’s surrender on April 9, 1865. The regiment later participated in the Grand Review in Washington before mustering out on August 1, 1865.

An attractive and representative example of one of the most recognizable repeating firearms used by Union cavalry during the Civil War.
