According to noted authority Jim Frasca this plate goes on front of the leather shako of the French made chasseur uniforms that were sent over here by Americans living in Paris as a prize for the best drilled regiments in the Army of the Potomac. The 18th Massachusetts and the 62nd and 83 Pennsylvania infantry regiments. A number were sold as surplus by Francis Bannerman.
