Very small numbers of these fine arms, estimated to have been less than 50, with one known documented shipment of 20 ran through the blockade were used by the Confederacy during the war.. An English crown over VR is clear behind the hammer on the back of the lock. The Whitworth Patent marking is visible on top of the barrel and the 52 proof mark for .451 caliber is clearly visible. The trigger guard has the Best marking sharp and clearly visible. All the metal parts exhibit a pleasant pewter gray appearance with this example having iron mountings.
