Wonderful excavated example and the exact one pictured in Steve Mullinax's book CONFEDERATE BELT BUCKLES AND PLATES on page 141 in the expanded edition. This example retains a nice deep brownish patina on the die struck rolled brass face. The soldered wire belt loops are missing on the back. The Oglethorpe light infantry was organized in 1856. Early in the war they helped seize Fort Pulaski in 1861. Many of the members joined the 8th Georgia infantry saw saw service in Virginia and where several of these rare plates have been recovered. It is noted that no matching waist belt plates have surfaced.
