Model 1841 Mississippi rifle produced at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and later altered at Harpers Ferry. Type 2 alteration performed by shortening the stock fore end, adding a shorter barrel band, attaching a saber bayonet lug to the side of the barrel and installing a long-range rear sight. This work was performed around 1855 and records indicate that Harpers Ferry produced around 10,000 bayonets to fit the type 2 alteration.
Lock plate strongly marked with an eagle motif and US forward of the hammer. The rear of the lock is marked HARPERS FERRY and date (1852). The barrel has a medium grey appearance with heavy pitting around the bolster area obscuring most of the markings. The date on the barrel tang is faint with the numbers 8 and 5 still visible. Brass butt plate, patch box, trigger guard and barrel bands have a nice medium gold patina and are all original. The rear band has a distinct letter A stamped on the top. The walnut stock is fine with the usual nicks and dings from actual field use.
