Very fine example of the type 1 alteration performed at Harpers Ferry to accept a Snell pattern bayonet. Approximately 1600 were altered at Harpers Ferry circa 1855 for the Snell bayonet. The lock plate is strongly marked with the eagle motif and US forward of the hammer. Behind the hammer is Harpers Ferry and the date 1848. The barrel markings are sharp and strong along with a matching date of 1848 on the tang. The barrel has a nice brown patina with some of the original plumb brown arsenal finish visible around the rear band extending back. Very nice wood with the inspector's cartouche faintly visible with several nicks and dings with an approximate 2.5-inch scratch forward of the lock as shown in the photos. All the brass hardware is intact and retains a pleasant light gold patina. The lock action is mechanically perfect and functions properly.
