This is the large size South Carolina and the rarest of the oval plates. Scratched into the back is the name R.B. Exum. My research finds a R. B. Exum that served as a private in company D of the 1st South Carolina Light Artillery. The plate is on a leather belt and has a pleasing copper tinted brass patina.
