In the last 50 years I have had the privilege of handling 3 first model Morse carbines. Two of those have been this year. The first one this year was serial number 16. This fine example is serial number 198 which is towards the end of the 1st model serial range. The total production of the Morse breech loading carbines is estimated to have been around 1000. The latest first model that I have seen referenced is serial number 257 and the earliest true 2nd model is serial number 274 so it would be safe to assume that total production would be somewhere around 260. The primary difference between the two types is the loading latch. The type 1 has an internal latch lock that is activated by cocking the hammer. The type 2 has an external latch that has to be pulled back to open the loading latch. The 2nd model latch mechanism was an improvement that prevented the latch opening when using the weapon.
This carbine is in very fine condition and and mechanically functions properly. The action is crisp. All the brass parts have a mellow patina and the barrel has very nice brown patina. There are several pin point punch mark initials in several places and the name Daisey is clearly stamped on the frame.
