.54 caliber Model 1816 flintlock pistol manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut. Total production is estimated to have been around 19,000 from 1817 to 1820.This example was probably made around 1820 under contract with the State of South Carolina. This pistol was altered to percussion for Civil War use by removing the flintlock parts, adding a drum bolster with cone to the barrel and installing a crude fabricated percussion hammer. The barrel is marked with S. Carolina and P over US proof marks. This gun is in attic condition showing heavy use and but still retaining the hickory ramrod. All the metal parts have a dark patina with rust pitting in places. The Simeon North markings on the lock are mostly obscured by rust pitting with only a couple letters visible. The nipple is missing in the cone and the action will not stay at full cock. The wood is nice with a crack forward of the lock and another under the side plate as shown in my pictures. Many southern volunteers carried such alterations off to war in 1861 and if this could talk it would have a good story.
