Exact same Confederate alteration pictured in CONFEDERATE RIFLES AND MUSKETS by Murphy and Madaus on page 333 plate 22. At the outbreak of hostility and Northern aggression a number of the flintlock Hall rifles were on hand at southern arsenals. Murphy and Madaus call this type of alteration the Western style identified by the old flintlock hammer was cut above the throat and a percussion cone and hammer spur were brazed to the existing hammer.
The metal parts show evidence of having been cleaned some time ago and have an overall light pitting on most of the parts. The markings on the breech block are mostly obliterated by pitting from gasses emitted while firing. The Confederate assembly marks, (10 dots) Are visible on the hammer, breech-block and the rear spring retainer as shown in my pictures. The wood is in overall fine condition with the actual nicks and dings associated with field use.
