Fresh to the market and out of my personal collection. Crudely scratched into the butt-plate is CO B 8TH ALA JADM JOWERS. Records show that Josiah DeMarcus Jowers was born on March 11, 1835 in Chambers County Alabama. When the war broke out he enlisted as a private in company B of the 8th Alabama infantry. Private Jowers served with his regiment throughout the war and was present at Appomattox during the surrender. During action at Frazier's farm, he was wounded and spent several months in the hospital. After his recovery Private Jowers saw action at Chancellorsville and was present at the Battle of Gettysburg.
The musket is in overall fine condition for a confederate used arm. All the components are correct for a Richmond rifled musket including the ramrod. The rear site has been removed and replaced with a blade type sight that appears contemporary with the use of the gun. The wood is fine and shows some use indicative with use in the field. All the mechanical actions are fine and operate correctly. All in all, a classic confederate musket that is identified to the soldier that carried it and quite possible that it was at Gettysburg. A photograph of private Jowers exist in the Alabama state archives and a copy is displayed in my photos.
