US MODEL 1817 COMMON RIFLE BY HENRY DERRINGER
Item #: tb143

Nice gun in original flint with strong markings on the barrel and lock plate. The lock plate is nicely stamped US over Derringer and Philadelphia with 1841 behind the hammer. The butt plate is marked US, and the barrel is marked US over the inspector's mark, NWP and P with the date 1841 on the barrel tang. Henry Derringer is reported to have had a government contract and produced approximately 13,000 of these arms circa 1817 through the early 1840's. All the metal parts have a smooth brown patina and have never been cleaned. The center barrel band is missing the swivel, and the frisson spring is moderately weak. The bore is still the original .54 caliber with rifling visible. The stock is fine with the usual nicks and dings from storage and field use and the cartouche is visible opposite the lock. All in all, a very fine example of an important U.S. martial arm in original flint.
