Robert S. Dumont enlisted as Captain in the 5th New York Infantry. After resigning his commission, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as secretary and aid to admiral Bell on the Pacific Squadron. In 1863 he was Naval Judge advocate General of that squadron. He returned to New York and practiced law until his death in 1873.
