These particular alterations are addressed on pages 439-448 of CONFEDERATE RIFLES AND MUSKETS BY MURPHY AND MADAUS. An example of this type of alteration is shown on pages 443-445 in the book. These arms were said to be repaired and shortened and also readapted for a socket bayonet. Plate 4 on page 445 shows how the barrel was turned at the muzzle with the modified band arraignment same as on this musket. The original M1842 ramrod was shortened, and a crude worm or puller was filed on the end. The barrel on this example has been cut to 32 inches. The gun is in overall good condition with strong markings and dated 1849 on the lock. All of the metal parts have a medium grey appearance having been lightly cleaned many years ago. The wood is nice having the usual nicks and dings associated with storage and field use.
Price: $2,750.00 USD (Sale Pending)
