Robert Johnson Middletown, Connecticut provided approximately 5000 of the model 1817 rifles under contract between 1821-1824 for the U.S. government. This example appears to be dated 1824 and marked R.Johnson with a U.S and Eagle and Middletown Connecticut on the lock.
The bore is smooth and is about .60 caliber. The metal parts have an overall pleasant brown appearance and retain sharp markings with the exception of the date on the lock in which the last number is faint. The wood is fine with a few minor nicks and dings from storage and field use. This rifle was converted to percussion by cutting the barrel and fitting a breech with an integral bolster on to the barrel similar to alterations done by Hewes and Phillips. Interesting alteration not often seen on Common rifles.
