CONFEDERATE READ AND WATSON TYPE 1 RIFLE
Item #: C-16

Manufactured between 1862-1863 with total production estimated to be around 900 carbines and rifles. These unusual arms utilized Hall parts that the state of Virginia had received from the Federal government under the 1808 militia act. Of special note is that these arms were altered from breech loaders to muzzle loaders. The rifle, serial number 169, has an overall nice brown patina and displays well.. The wood is in good condition with several minor cracks repaired from the inside and not noticeable on the exterior. As in some Read and Watson rifles the stock is a 2 piece stock secured under the middle barrel band as shown in my pictures. The nipple is damaged and shows evidence of dry firing. All mechanics work but the main spring is a little weak. Rare confederate firearm seldom encountered.
