This tin drum canteen was once part of the Steve Mullinax collection and is pictured on page 52 of CIVIL WAR CANTEENS by Steven Sylvia and Mike O'Donnell. Many years ago, I purchased this canteen from Bill Erquitt and later sold it to Steve Mullinax. Steve's tag is still attached showing he obtained it from me in 1997 for $1400.00.
The museum tag on the front reads " CANTEEN WHICH BELONGED TO GENERAL GEORGE THOMAS (TIGE) ANDERSON C.S.A. PRESENTED BY MISS ROSE RHEBERGH" I was told that Miss Rose Rhebergh was General Anderson's niece. Quick research found her living in Covington, Georgia in 1900 and Covington, Georgia is where General Anderson was born. More research is needed.
General Anderson was born on February 3, 1824, and had a distinguished career serving during the Mexican War and later in the Civil War commanding a Brigade under General John Hood at Gettysburg. At Gettysburg General Anderson was engaged in the action around the Devil's Den and the Wheatfield where he was wounded. Tige Anderson has the distinction today of being one of General Lee's hardest fighting subordinates. After the war George T. Anderson served as a police chief in Atlanta and later moved to Anniston, Alabama where he passed away on April 4, 1901.
The canteen is in fine condition and has a rough cotton web sling.
Included with the canteen is an Anthony CDV of General Anderson
