Tough to find example of the great coat issued to Civil War mounted troops. Double breasted with two rows of 6 buttons on the inside coat and a row of 12 buttons on the cape. Coarse burlap inside liner with Sgt. P. Arnold written inside in ink. I researched the name but did not have any luck finding a perfect match in any of the Civil War rosters. The stitching is loose on one side of the inside liner, the seam on the back and the collar easily repaired. The coat is marked with 2 dots inside the arm pit for size two. Also stamped inside are the markings for the moth proofing process that was applied in 1864 for storage. The cape appears to have been reattached at some point in time and appears to be of a slightly different material.
