Beautiful non dug plate with the letters I J G above an eagle perched upon a harp. The Irish Jasper Greens were founded in 1842 and recruited members of Irish decent in Savannah. Georgia. As the State of Georgia began to try to organize the state volunteer militia system the Greens were incorporated into several units to form the Independent Volunteer Battalion of Savannah in 1852. During the war between the states they were organized into the 1st Regiment of Georgia Volunteers and served in the Savannah area throughout the war. Strikingly beautiful non dug example from an old collection and pictured on page 143 in Steve Mullinax's book CONFEDERATE BELT BUCKLES AND PLATES.
