Extremely rare example of the India Rubber cartridge made for the .50 caliber Smith carbine. These were made with a black India rubber cylinder with the conical bullet fitted into the mouth. The rubber case carbine cartridge was patented by Gilbert Smith in 1857. This design was a solution to the problem of breech obturation. The rubber case material would expand tightly against the cylinder walls upon ignition and later contracted when the projectile left the cylinder so the cartridge case could be easily removed.
This cartridge is in very fine condition and a wonderful example of a rare Civil War cartridge.
