Interesting wood pipe carved from what appears to be a tree knot. On a flat panel near the stem is "ROANOKE FEB. 8TH 1862". Very unusual and nicely done as a memento of the battle. the battle was a 2 day amphibious operation conducted against Confederate forces on Roanoke Island February 7th and 8th 1863. On the 2nd day, February 8th confederate forces were flanked on both sides and finally forced to surrender the 2 forts that they occupied.
