1817 common Rifle made by R&J.D. Johnson and altered to percussion. Approximately 3000 produced under contract circa 1824-1827 many of which saw Civil War use. The lock plate is marked in the center with U.S. /with an Eagle motif , R.&J.D. Johnson and vertically at the rear with the date and Middn/ Conn. in an arc. The lock marking are sharp and strong with the exception of the last number in the date which is obscure. Barrel markings are visible with US over JW over P with the date 1826 on the tang. All metal parts have a deep dark patina with some pitting around the nipple bolster and extending down the barrel. The butt plate is heavily pitted from more than likely sitting on a damp cellar floor. Wood is nice with very few minor nicks and dings from use. Opposite the lock is stamped the inspector's mark HV and on the comb in large letters is MASS for state of Massachusetts. The rifle retains it's original ramrod and the bore has rifling that is dirty and pitted.
