Extremely rare and scarce German Kriegsmarine holster for the Colt 1851 Navy revolver. In 1855 the Prussians discovered a shipment of 3000 1851 Colt Navy revolvers hidden in bales of cotton shipped from New York to Russia. Prussia was a neutral power during the Crimean war and prohibited shipment of arms across its borders. Naturally this incident was an embarrassment to Colt who was also trying to sell arms to the British government at the same time. 1000 of the captured arms were later issued to the German Navy.
The box is constructed of brown leather with a reinforced opening. Stamped on the front of the attached cartridge box is the Crown and KM stamping for the German Navy. On the front of the holster is a pouch containing a brass capper serial numbered KM 223. Overall condition is very fine with all leather parts pliable and intact.
