Very nice maker's marked Haiman foot officer's sword. This particular sword is very unique in the fact the guard is slanted to the blade and the throat of the scabbard is made with a distinct slant to match the guard. This is the first example that I have encountered with that feature. Marked on the blade is L.Haiman & Bro.
Lewis Haiman and his brother Elias were Prussian immigrants that arrived in this country and settled in Columbus, Georgia in the 1850's. Before the Civil War the brothers ran a successful tinsmith shop in Columbus. When the Civil War started the brothers seized on the opportunity to begin manufacturing swords for the Confederacy. The Haiman brother's business soon blossomed, and they were soon branching out in other areas such as manufacturing not only swords, but sword belts, sword knots, harness, accouterments and bayonet scabbards. When Columbus fell at the end of the war it was reported that Yankee general James Wilson offered to spare and not burn the Haiman's factories if Louis Haiman would take the oath of allegiance to the United States. Louis Haiman refused, and the factories were burned, and the Haiman brothers faded into history.
The sword has a deep overall patina on all the brass parts and are original to the sword. The grips are fine and retain all of the leather and the twisted wire wrap. The blade has a gun metal grey appearance and is boldly maker marked near the guard with an unstopped fuller. A few very minor nicks are visible on the cutting edge of the blade. The original leather scabbard is intact and had a break that has been expertly repaired by Jim Brown.
