Mule ear Jenks Navy carbine dated 1846 with the oval loading aperture and marked USN with inspector mark on the breech. The lock is strongly marked N.P. AMES SPRINGFIELD MASS. and Wm. JENKS. Overall condition is very fine with the brass barrel bands, trigger guard and butt plate exhibiting a very pleasant dark brownish patina. All metal parts have a very nice patina as shown in the photos with a few minor scratches. The wood without an inspector's cartouche is nice with the usual nicks and dings associated with use. The .54 caliber bore is somewhat dirty but has strong rifling. Total production of these arms was approximately 4,250 between 1843 and 1846. Unique in the fact that these were a side hammer single shot breechloader made for the U.S. Navy.
