Dug cartridge box plate with what appears to be a name and company C 41st regiment scratched in the back. I bought this plate several years ago when the Catlett Brothers Collection was sold. The brothers amassed a very prestigious collection in the early days of relic hunting. A large amount of their finds was in the Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg area where they lived. At one time they ran a store near the Chancellorsville battlefield where they sold relics to the public. I can remember when I was a young man stopping and admiring all the fine relics for sale. When I purchased this plate, I had hoped to research the inscription and establish a positive ID. After several grueling research sessions and a couple beers I narrowed it down to 3 possible regiments, the 41st New York, 41st. Pennsylvania and the 41st. Virginia. The closest matches with only 3 letters of the last name to go on were 2 soldiers in the company C 41st New York infantry. Those being Frank Schilow and Frank Schmitz. These two names are far from conclusive and further research may reveal something more substantial.
