A nice example of a model 1817 Common Rifle manufactured by Robert Johnson Middletown, Connecticut. Total production is estimated to have been around 5000 arms made between 1821-23. The metal parts have an overall brownish grey patina and are in fine condition. Lock marked R. Johnson in arc with U.S. over eagle. The eagle is extremely faint and not visible. The lock is mechanically perfect properly. This example has been altered to percussion by the nipple in barrel method for Civil War use. The wood is overall fine with several nicks and dings from field use. The rifling is still visible in the bore and displays well.
